Free Quilting Tips
This one bears repeating!I know you have all heard this many times, but it is good to have a reminder once in a while. When you are cutting pieces for a quilt, lots of pieces... double check yourself and see if you are really bearing down with that rotary cutter. Does it skip threads here and there? Do you have to run the cutter over the same line twice? You know what the problem is. You need a new blade! I just reminded myself of this easy to fix problem. I had been cutting strips, trying to cut multiple layers, and I was doing that bearing down and cutting on the same place twice to get them cut cleanly. I stopped and changed the blade, and zipped through the rest of the cutting like a breeze. Gone was the effort and frustration. I know blades are expensive, but for peace of mind and renewing the joy of the process, go ahead and get new blades to keep on hand. And remember to dispose of the old blade carefully. I keep a 5 blade holder marked with "old blades" and fill it up. When it is full, throw the whole thing away. Once you use the last blade from a package, get a new package of 5 and save the empty one for old ones. |
