Welcome

Betty Alofs
Artist's Statement

After many years of sewing I discovered quilting and fell in love with it right away. I began not only making quilts, but collecting antique quilts. Trying to reproduce the look of antique quilts was great fun. Once I began to embrace color and new techniques, I knew I had found my true calling, as they say. Making quilts and teaching others what I have learned is a big part of my life now. But my main focus is creating my own pictorial patterns for realistic appliqued quilts and wall hangings. The excitement builds from the initial challenge of turning my photos into applique patterns to the application of the right color, value, texture and perspective. When it is just right, I have a great feeling of satisfaction knowing that I had reached my goal of transforming sometimes difficult scenes into beautiful appliqued pieces. Part of the satisfaction is the discovery of just the perfect fabric for my pieces and using thread and embellishments bringing the piece to life. As I create these quilts, I am happy and content to problem solve, try new methods and materials, produce a satisfying end result and lose all track of time zoning out as I concentrate on the work.

Quilt University

I am pleased to be a member of the faculty of Quilt Unversity. Taking an online class is a great way to learn without leaving the privacy of your own home. Taking the class in the morning before work, evening after work, or just early in the morning still in your PJ's is great fun. Check out www.quiltuniversity.com and see what they have to offer.

New Book!

My new book "Quilt Your Favorite Photos" was favorably reviewed in the latest issue of Quilter's Newsletter Magazine in the book review section. I have been teaching from the book at local quilt shops, and am looking forward to some travel to teach it in other places.

News

I was thrilled and honored to have been asked to participate in the Empty Spools Seminar at Pacific Grove (Asilomar Conference Grounds) as Artist in Residence this past year. What a great experience it was! If you have never attended this seminar series, you are in for such a treat. The surroundings, the ocean, the critters (deer, otters, yes and even the raccoons) are charming and the place is restful and soothing. The sea air and sounds of the ocean will lull you to sleep at night, and the seminar activities will excite and please you throughout the series. Check out www.emptyspoolsseminars.com and see what its all about.

New Link

A new link has been added to my links page. It is called Pink Cures, and is the brain child of my niece Tara (14 yr old) in Maryland. She was moved by the cancer fight of her friend's mother, and decided to do something to help. She and her mother Kris have created their own web site where they make and sell jewelry and other items, with 100% of the profits going directly to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Check out her site and see what you can do to help.
